Spring time in the Rockies

5-23-14

Mother Nature makes a lier out of me again. In my last article I said it was probably okay to start your outdoor gardening. Well, usually by Mothers Day it is okay to put your vegetable gardens in the ground. But apparently not this year,

Spring time in the Rockies…is a beautiful time of year, but we have many wild weather events to deal with. I lost 4 little plants. They get knocked down and/or stripped clean by the hail. Yesterday I was slow to react to the TV weather forecasts. If it rains hard on them it can liquify the soil so that the plants float out or tip over and fall out of the container. Also, if your plants take too much water in their container, the roots get too wet and can drown and rot. With the hail, the leaves get knocked off and/ or the stem takes a hit and is damaged irrepairably.

I got totally soaked twice yesterday as I frantically threw some tarps up to cover the young plants.  We had about two inches of pea sized hail not to mention nine tenths of an inch of hard rain. What a mess. The ground turned into gravy.  Today wil be different.  Plus it has been very sunny this morning. A day of sunlight will fix a lot of hurt.

This is because people are wholesale sildenafil looking for treatments that do not include chemicals or will cause side-effects on their body. This allows blood to flow into the penis, causing a cialis 5mg discount http://deeprootsmag.org/page/9/?feedsort=date rock hard erection. Opioid abuse, an all pervasive malady Opioid misuse and abuse has pushed the United States into levitra free samples such a crisis that it has ultimately taken the form of an epidemic. Also, if things go bad, you have plenty of time to start over. If you do lose most or all of your young germinants, chalk it up to experience. It’s just effort and money down the drain. I’ve lost the tomatoes, peppers and 4 pot plants. Well, this is what happens some years. Life on the Front Range of Colorado is sometimes turbulent and always interesting.

I have erected a simple, strong structure in my backyard. I’ve used 10ft x 4in x 4in wooden poles in the ground buried 20 inches deep. So they stick up 8 1/2 feet. I’ve connected them up top with 2×4’s so that I have a rib cage trellis that I can throw tarps upon. I have cubicales, kind of, that are 8 1/2 foot x  91/2 foot square by 8 1/2 foot tall. I have many tarps with grommets around the edges, and I tie them up to the 2x4s up top. Not only can I save the plants from the worst of the rain-hail-wind weather events but I’ll be able to create a dark space in which to “sex my plants” thru light deprivation. During the last 3 weeks of June, I’ll use these tented cubicales to “shed the plants”.

After a couple days of Colorado sunshine, it’ll be time to begin a high nitrogen fertilizer program. I want to let things dry out first.

But for now and tomorrow, all I want is for these plants to dry out and be in the sunlight. Mothers Day is past and Memorial Day Holiday weekend is upon us. This certainly is springtime. There will be plenty of sunlight opportunities for our plants as we head into June and summertime.

My third ear

It’s not too late to germinate pot seeds and get a full season’s growth out of your plants. I’ve been germinating seeds for 4 weeks now. Only a few at a time…as it is convenient for me. The 1st seeds I germinated were Sativa dominant because they take longer in the growth stage than Indicas. The first sprouts that popped up are now transplanted into larger containers. I water them throughly every other day. I have put one large coffee cup-full of plain white sugar into the 5 gallon water bucket and stirred it in. Next week I will begin to give the plants some nitrogen-heavy fertilizer, but it’ll be diluted down. Lots of real sunlight is what they need. The night time low temps are consistently above 40˚F and the days are warming up and are sunny. I worry about a hard rain fall, hail, and strong winds.

It is nice (I am finding out) to have a simple structure to grow under. I can tent-up with tarps to stave off the difficult weather situations. Also I plan to use tarps to create a “dark room” in which to sex these plants. I’ll write more on how to force your plants to show their sex in another article, later.

After the seed germinates, I’ll up-pot it into a larger (mid-size) container that I can leave it in until after it shows its sex. Then the females get up-potted into their final size containers. Most years I’ll keep one nice male of known genetics to use later to make seeds for next year. In my book, “Growing Marijuana Outdoors in Colorado”, I suggested that it was okay to germinate pot seeds in March or April. Well, if you are doing this mostly outdoors, I should say to wait until late April through the first week of June to do this. If you have a basement or a back room or garage to work in, then you can safely begin germinating seeds from mid March on. On the front range of Colorado, it is best to wait until early May, Mothers Day. I usually jump the gun and start a little bit early. The thinking is to try  to get more vegetative growth on your plants. However, I still maintain that the most important 2 months are the last  two, September and October. During the hot, sunny days of June, July and August, they’ll get plenty big and bushy.
More to the point, if you’re looking to have sex for a longer period of time, then there is big possibility that they stop working, and you need to switch between few of them. buy viagra for cheap When Vata gets imbalanced it imbalances its 5 subtypes (Vyana, Udana, Samana, Prana, Apaana ). viagra prices Neck injuries pill viagra for sale may also occurs while playing sports. It may damage nerves and important source viagra samples blood vessels in the penis.
As far as fertilizer goes…if you are using good soil, fertilizer becomes less important. Your plants do like a little sugar and also a little beer, but don’t go over board on this. Don’t  use diet soda or 3.2 beer. Real soda pop has sugars in it and, heck, it’s a liquid. Also, don’t put raw alcohol or real strong alcohol on your plants. Last night’s leftover beer works just fine. Also, don’t smoke around your plants, either tobacco or pot. The advantage of growing outside is the clean, fresh air and the strong Colorado sunlight.

As I’ve written many times, do not try to use this Colorado clay. Use good store bought mid- priced soil. This season, I’m using last years soil, mixed with my own compost. Being the cheap-skate that I am, I’m trying to not spend any money this season. Also, liquid household ammonia is nitrogen and can be mixed into your 5 gallon bucket of de-chlorinated water. A little goes a long way…a quick 3-count pour. Not a full-on pour, just a steady dribble with a quick count to three. A little goes a long way… too much will burn the plants roots. Growing pot outdoors is not rocket science. This is a weed. Good soil, enough fresh water and lots of free Colorado sunshine are the main ingredients. I use fertilizer more to steer the plants. I use commercial fertilizer…24-8-16 and 20-20-20 for vegetative growth and  to bloom them I’ll use anything with a high middle number, such as 0-8-0 or 8-58-8 or 4-18-8.  These are the N-P-K numbers. High nitrogen is used while the plants are growing leaves and twigs. Ammonia is a nitrogen. Blooming fertilizers usually have a very high P or phosphate number. Bone meal is a powdered phosphate fertilizer. This phosphorus promotes blooming and big buds. It’ll be called a bloom booster fertilizer on the label. All these commercial fertilizers are salt based so I dilute them. I’ve eaten plenty of tomatoes grown in commercial fertilizer and have smoke lots of pot grown in commercial fertilizer. Nothing wrong with me, unless that 3rd ear on the side of my head bothers you.

Seed Talk

Okay, I believe our Front Range weather will cooperate from here on out. The night time low temps are going to be 38˚ and above. You should be able to germinate pot seeds now, if you haven’t done so already. You should have up to another four weeks to start your plants. If you are using feminized auto flowering seeds it is up to your convenience as to when to start them. As I understand it, they’ll grow vegetatively for about 4 weeks and then they will automatically start to go into the flowering stage, irrespective of the real worlds light cycle. I can leave my young plants outside full time now. No more lugging them in at night, outside for the daytime sunlight. Yes, it has been a bit of a hassle, but in the long run, I like to grow pot outside in the sunlight.

As I have said before, the weather and the rippers can be dangerous all season long. No matter how much money that the marijuana industry tax money funds the local police departments, the police aren’t going to lift a finger to help us gardeners., You can use tarps to build a tent of sorts over your plants. You’ll have to devise various ways to deter thieves. I personally want to see pot prices keep on falling. That alone will discourage people from stealing it just to sell it. Also, a good fence makes for good neighbors. Get a tall fence that folks cannot see thru and use locks on your gates. Also you can get baby monitors that can listen to your sideyard or backyard. You can get laser beam security alarms that “watch” your fence lines. Also, you can put bells on your gates and fences. Also, plastic trash bags full of aluminum cans make a lot noise. Shovels and rakes can be used to interfere with intruders. Interior fences, even chicken wire, can be thrown up with 2×4’s and locked shut.

As far as the politics of this goes, we all need to continue to vote for pro-pot candidates on all levels, especially on the local city councils. Otherwise the conservatives, the straits, the anti-pot people will continue to constrict the pot industry, will continue to constrict and re-criminalize us outdoor pot growers.

Growing outdoors may be difficult but it is much better than trying to grow your 6 girl plants indoors. Inside growers must face the prospect of being an interior carpenter, plumber, electrician, janitor and horticulturalist. And then there is the increased electric bills to consider, as well as other safety hazards.

I want my girls to grow for longer than 4 weeks. I like them to grow (vegetatively) bigger and taller for almost 4 months. Big and bushy. Then I want them to go seriously into flower for 5 to 8 weeks, growing sticky buds. Regular pot seeds have more stable genetics than do these hybrids and also they have a lot more vibrancy or energy. I’ve had 80% to 95% germination rate for fresh, regular pot seeds. I’ve had anywhere from 25% to 85% germination rate from expensive store bought seeds. As far as the plants energy level goes, seeds grow a long tap-root but clones do not. Clones generally do not have the immediate vitality and strong growth as seed grown plants have. So, to sum up, I like to grow plants from seeds… from my seed stock of known plant genetics, and from last year’s fresh seed stock. I will usually grow one new type of pot plant every season so that I can hybredize it to get some new, different seeds for next season. As the farmer, you get to name your plants.

The older the seed stock is, the fewer that will germinate. I figure the germination rate goes down 15% every year. So fresh seeds from last season (7 months ago) should give us a 95% rate. Three years ago should give us around 65% rate. Seeds from 5 years ago, maybe a 35% germination rate. If I can only get even one seed to pop, then I can get its genetics crossed with another variety, weather it goes male or female. But now I’m getting way ahead of my self.

This is May 14th, we’ll have14 hours and 20 minutes of sunlight today and a full moon tonight.

Cuca Racha

I remember when Frank Zappa said “Hi guy, wanna die? Do speed. It’ll rot your liver, rot  your teeth, rot your kidneys, rot your brain. In other words it’ll make you just like your parents (cuca racha).” Well, I totally agree with Frank, and I want to expand that to some synthetic stuff called spice. Do not buy that stuff. Don’t eat it, snort it or smoke it. Spice is not anything at all like marijuana. Spice does not look or smell like pot ( to me) and it is a stupid thing to get involved with. No one knows what it is or what is in it. It will mess you up.

Okay, blah, blah, blah.

Here we are one week into May. It is time to begin this growing process. I am germinating seeds and am getting my containers and soil ready. Another grow season is upon us. Folks, I am not trying to compete with the big grow operations. I am not going to win the next CannaCup competition. However, I will have plenty of good get-high for the entire year. I do not have to go out and buy pot to smoke from a dispensary. And neither will you when you grow your own marijuana outdoors, at home. Just as the tomatoes I grow taste better than store bought ones. The pot I have grown is very satisfying. Pot plants are a thing of beauty. They smell good and they look good. When you are able to grow your own vegetables and your own marijuana medicine, you’ll be more self-sufficient. Learn to do this now, before the Denver City Council completely re-criminalizes marijuana cultivation.

Watch the TV weather forecasts. It might be getting cold these next few nights. Especially if it rains, then I will be bringing indoors all the plants that I have outside. If it is cold and soggy, our young marijuana plants will have to be protected.

About 13 or 14 years ago, the people of the state of Colorado voted in favor of initiative #20 which established the medical marijuana system of Red Cards, Grow Ops and medical marijuana dispensaries. About 1 1/2 years ago we the people of Colorado voted in favor of a Colorado State Constitutional Amendment, #64. This establishes the rights of citizens over the age of 21 to smoke pot recreationally. You may have heard, retail pot sales include a ton of taxes, hence is very expensive.

Section 3 of Amendment #64 covers “personal uses of marijuana” and states the acts that are not unlawful.

Germination Stratagies

Wouldn’t  you know it. Looks like we are going to have 4 or 5 nights in a row of cold, wet weather. If your plants get wet and then it gets below 36˚ or 37˚, they will probably not make it. These little plants have no bark on them at all and they cannot withstand temps near freezing. Actually, I want the night-time low temps to be above 38˚.

We still have 5 or even 6 weeks to find pot seeds and germinate them. I may  have started too soon, but it just means I’ll have more work to do. Maybe I can “tent” them to keep the sprouts dry and warmish. Either that or I’ll have to take them all into my house at night in order to protect them.

To germinate, I do not use the wet paper towel method nor do I use (ever again) those expandable pellets. I like the “Super Plugs” and the peat pot methods. As soon as the seed germinates and a sprout appears I put them outdoors into the direct sunlight.

pot germinates

When they have grown roots thru the plug or out the sides of the peat pot (or Cow Pots), then I transplant them into a larger container. Hopefully I can leave the plant in this container for several months as it grows topside vegetation and finally sexes. We only want the plant to show us if it will be a male or not and then go back into “veg” (vegetative growth). I want to know which plants are definitely males, so that I can get rid of them. Now, I may decide to keep a male if I think it has special genetic traits. I often times will put male powder (pollen) right onto a female flower in order to get a few seeds. I basically grow sensimilla pot, that is, unfertilized females. But sometimes I want some pot seeds for next year’s crop. Seeds with known genetics.

Right now, during April and May, we want our youngsters to grow roots. Don’t worry about topside growth. All we want is a lot of strong roots going down deep into the container.

Now as far as timing goes, it is the last 2 or 3 months that’s most important to us. In the 1st 2 or 3 months, sure we would like to have good weather, however it is September and October that we need to have favorable weather for the completion of our flower buds.

Like a vegetable garden, growing pot year in and year out is simply a matter of meeting challenges.

P.S. We all need to act in a responsible manner. Lock up your guns, alcohol, marijuana and especially your pharmaceuticals. Keep this stuff out of the reach of your kids, grandkids or your neighbors kids. Really.

Grow our own pot

I am telling you this, don’t try to use the expandable seed starter pellets made by NK Lawn and Garden. The “soil” inside is not good for germinating pot seeds. Also, the fabric that holds the pellet together is too tough for roots to grow through. I do like and use peat pots or Cow Pots and also a new item called Super Plugs. Into each peat pot I put one seed 1/2 inch deep into the  pots which have been filled with special germinating soil. With Super Plugs, place one seed down into the hole and keep them moist. Keep them upright. When the roots grow thru the sides of the super-plug, then plant the entire plug, germinant and all into a larger container. Same goes with peat pots or Cow Pots. The ones I use are about 3 inches across and 4 or 5 inches deep. I use the very light germinating and cloning soil. When the young sprouts are big enough, I plant the entire (cardboard) pot into the soil of a larger container. The paper-mache seed germinanting units (cardboard base and clear plastic top) get moldy and yucky after only one use. You’re better off using a plastic tray because it is washable and reusable.

With the so-called “new freedoms” that we in Colorado have due to #20 and #64…comes new responsibilities. This is 4-20 weekend and it is tempting to “go nuts”, but please, folks, mind your manners.

As I understand it…back in the 60 ‘s and 70’s, the police on sunset strip used the cop-jargon of “we got a 420 here” on their radios to headquarters when they had a “druggie” to take in. A “420” was someone hopped up on drugs in public. Well, over the years that expression became turned on its ear. Us hippies used it to denote a pot-celebration on the date, April 20th. 420 has been and still is a celebration of life, of freedom, of feeling good to be high. We’ve been on the outside of this society, legally and all, for 50 years. On this one day, we gotta show “the man” that we have survived, no matter how hard they try to catch us and stomp us out. Stick it in their face, so to speak. Well I didn’t survive all this time by attracting undue attention to myself. And neither did you. We have to be smart. Even if you chose to make the scene (at Civic Center Park), don’t cause a scene. Be cool. Be tactful. If we give the people of Colorado any reason at all…all this “new freedom” will be taken away. I never thought I would live to see this day. It is some what legal to grow pot in our backyards.  It is a good time to celebrate living in Colorado. And I am not going to spoil it by getting into trouble or making us pot smokers look bad.

What we want is for 48 more states to legalize pot and for the Feds to get off our backs. What we want is to be able to grow our own erb for our own use in our own homes. Growing pot in your backyard should be no big deal, should be  ubiquitous.

Time to germinate?

Soon.   You’ll have to be attuned to your local weather. Time to germinate? If the day/night low temps are below 38˚F…you’ll not want to have any of your pot plants outdoors. The very least effective way to germinate is by throwing seeds over the ground. It is much better to try to germinate each seed individually by using an expandable pellet or barrel or else by using peat pots. With these paper-mache containers you’ll want to fill them with a very very light soil called… germinating and cloning soil. When the seed gets damp it’ll split open and a tap root will grow out. Hopefully the tap root will have enough energy to emerge and seek soil. This very very light soil offers almost no resistance to the tap root, which is  a good thing. Don’t drown these newly germinated plants in water, but do keep the soil moist. Many commercial germinators have a base that holds water and peat pots and a clear plastic top that encourages humidity and moisture to condense. This seems to be a good thing for the young germinates. Cow-pots seem to work as good as peat-pots.

In a couple weeks, after the roots have  grown through the bottom of the peat pot or the sides of the pellets then it’ll be time to up-pot them. Pot them into a larger container (6 or 8 inches wide by 6 or 8 or 10 inches deep) so that  you can grow the pot for a while ’till “sexing”.

Keep track of each plant by labeling or mapping them out on paper. I pay attention to germination dates and the date of up-potting. If you have feminized seeds that are “auto-flowering,” the clock starts upon germination. Typically these auto flowering seed strains give you 45 to 50 days in vegetative growth and then 40 to 45 days in bloom. Thats it. You get what you get in terms of yield.  I worry about the modified genetics… what the ultimate effects will be.   I’m told that the “autoflowering” seeds have very unstable genetics. Hmmm.

It looks like we’ll have some cold nights over this next week, then it’ll warm up again. You can probably begin germinating seeds soon… now and thru-out May.
Therefore men buy generic india levitra to get the ultimate satisfaction of intimacy. Once again, we can grow only 12 plants per residential property in Denver…You’ll need to grow it in a fenced, locked yard, out of sight of your neighbors.  I’ll be looking for low-growing plants to keep them out of sight.

So, some plants are leafing out first and some plants are blooming first. The fruit trees, Bradford Pears and ornamental apple trees tend to bloom first so that they can set fruit. My Siberian Crab has leafed out and is going into bloom. My lilacs are leafing out which is nice because they are big and tall and make good cover for my pot plants. Of course the yellow plants are looking good! Golden Nine Bark, Forsythia, Daffodils and Dandylions. Also, I have some red tulips beginning to open. Every year it snows on this patch of red tulips as they bloom out. So, I figure this next 4 or 5 days will be snowy and cold. You may have to gently knock the snow off of your trees limbs. We need the coming precipitation but don’t want the broken down trees or shrubs.

Soon, it will warm up enough to get it all going…soon.

Save money, Grow pot outdoors

Well, it is now just about time to begin germinating your pot seeds. Save money, Grow your own pot outdoors. Now and through May, we have, practically speaking, 8 weeks to germinate seeds. With fresh seeds, expect at least 90% to pop open. Then expect about 45% of those to be females. If you have purchased “feminized seeds”, expect at least 80% to germinate and 99% of those to be girls. The genetics of these feminized plants has been modified. I am told that these feminized plants are genetically unstable and are not suitable to be used as clone mothers. I will find out more about this.

With store bought clones, ask the grower how much light they’ve been under. We are up to about 12 hours and 25 minutes of actual daylight. It would be nice if the clone they just sold you had been grown under 12 1/2 to 13 hours of synthetic light per cycle. Then it would be ready for steady vegetative growth outside. Also, when the young pot plants are forced to go into bloom too soon, they do not have the roots to sustain the growth of potential flower buds. If the plant you’ve bought is used to 18+  hours of light each photo-period, then it’ll try to go into “bloom-stage” even though it is only 10 to 20 inches tall. That is not big enough for me.

Oh boy…the days are getting longer and the night time low temps are coming up into the mid 30s. Get your containers and your soil ready to go. I use 3 types of containers. The 1st is the germination size. I have found a new product called SuperPlugs. These seem to work pretty well. Then there is an intermediate size, for early vegetative growth and sexing. These containers are anywhere from 4 inches to 9 inches wide and from 6 inches to 12 inches deep. after the young germinants have grown a lot of roots…roots through the pellet, barrel or plug, then the youngster gets planted into the intermediate size pots.

Unless you are mono-cropping, LABEL each container so that you’ll know what is what., Three months from now after you have moved your plants in and out and all around, you’ll be able to figure out which one is what. Final containers should be able to comfortably hold 13 to 15 inches deep of soil. I like for the final grow pots to be wide…19 inches or more. You’ll want the plants roots to fill the containers…to be root bound by late August or September.

You’ll save  lot of money by growing your marijuana outdoors. You’ll learn a lot and have fun doing it.   You can do this

Get Ready

As the night time low temps slowly move up into the 30’s, we can begin to think seriously about germinating pot seeds. The growing season is almost here. Most often, we here on the Front Range cannot put our vegetable crops in the ground until mid May, Mother’s Day. Sometimes we get lucky and our low temps come up early. We will need our local low temps to be consistently above 39˚F, if we are going 100% outdoor grow. Some folks use their basements or heated garages to start their seeds under lights.  Whether it is germinating pot seeds, lettuce, carrots or tomatoes, I don’t have the room for that luxury. People, I have waited until early June to germinate pot seeds and still have had a great harvest. Yes, March, April and May are important months, especially if you are trying to double crop. But for me, the most important time for agreeable weather is September and all of October.

A couple of peaves:

The Spice problem and the anti-driving high commercials. It is INSULTING the way the strait-folks still think that pot is bad for me.
1). Spice is NOT pot. Spice does not look or smell like erb nor does it cause marijuana like effects. It is NOT synthetic pot. Spice is it’s own thing. It is a very dangerous concoction of who knows what. There is NO marijuana in spice. Okay, now for #2.
2). The badly acted, badly produced commercials about people who are high. Very lame and derivative. Cheech and Chong got away with that type of satire over 40 years ago because those two guys were very inventive and talented and they came up with several somewhat funny skits that straits could laugh at. It was a bit, a routine, like a Jerry Lewis movie, it was way over the top. Those negative images were all that corporate America would allow on the TV or big screen. Although I found their portrayal interesting, it did not reflect the reality of my life or of my friends.

It won’t be long

Unless you have substantial indoor growing facilities, it is too early in this season to germinate pot seeds. Looking forward 5 to 7 nights…the night time low temps don’t even get above 35˚f, so it is too early as yet, but it won’t be long.

*Hey* keep your guns and ammo locked up. Keep your alcohol locked up. Keep your marijuana edibles locked up. Keep your tobacco or marijuana smoke locked up. Keep these things away from your pets, kids, neighbors and thieves. We all have to act in a responsible over all manner. Help a good kid from going bad. Keep things locked up. Out of sight, out of mind.

March 20th…12 hours, nine minutes of daylight. The 19th was the Vernal Equinox. Get your rubber/vinyl containers cleaned up. Use a bleach solution. Get your different types of soil together. Container soil and germinating soil. I’m using (among other things) a new (to me) item called a germinating plug. These are similar to the expandable pellets. These do not have that pesky mesh around them, so the new roots can easily grow thru.

Think about ways to enclose your new pot shoots. At night they’ll need warmth and protection from squirrels, foxes, stray dogs or cats and raccoons. Also, if you can “tent” them, you will be able to control their light-dark cycles so that you can “sex them” in a couple of months so that you can throw out the males. We can legally only grow 6 plants per person in Colorado, so we want to grow 6 big females. Six plants is not enough for me to do any kind of genetic breeding, crossing or hybredizing. But 6 plants will keep me happy all year. Colorado has perfect sunlight, strong and lots of it.

Rants for March 10th

I am not an attorney, but to the best of my knowledge, every citizen of Colorado over the age of 21 can legally grow 6 marijuana plants. The question is where?  Indoor grows are expensive and take up a lot of room in your home. There is a steep learning curve. You’ll have to enjoy being a janitor.  Also, you and your children really should not live around all of the insecticides, fertilizers and damp soil.  I grow pot outdoors in the  FREE full sunlight. I believe in growing pot outdoors in the fresh air and full sunlight. I live in Denver county, so my wife and I can legally only grow 12 pot plants. If I lived in an area that is zoned commercial, I then could grow 6 plants for myself as well as be a caregiver for several other folks, too. Yes, the plants have to be out of sight of the neighbors and still be in full sunlight.

Have you seen the new TV anti-pot advertisements yet? These guys still hate our guts for feeling good when we get high. The anti-driving ads are a poorly done theatre of the absurd. Forty years ago, the Cheech and Chong act that we saw then was the only portrayal of pot smokers that corporate America would allow on TV or film. This phoney characterization of us as dopes or zombies is what mayor Hick and most of the city council members really do think of us, and they continue to try to re-criminalize marijuana. So, we must pay attention to who runs for seats in our local city councils across Colorado. We need to vote for candidates who sincerely advocate for marijuana.

Now, as far as germinating seeds goes…wait.  Unless you have an indoor area with lights…it is too early yet.  Seeds are both precious and expensive, so don’t waste good seeds. Three options.
1.) wait until the night time low temps consistently stay above 39˚f or 40˚f. This could be late April thru mid May.  When  marijuana seeds germinate and are grown out of doors, they’ll be acclimated to the natural sunlight intensity and photo period.
2.) Germinate pot seeds indoors and take the tray of sprouts outside everyday to sit in the warm sunlight. The free and natural sunlight is the best way to grow healthy plants. Then bring them indoors every evening to be in a warm house. This is a bit of work and on some grey, rainy days, you’ll have to leave them in the warm house all day.

Must be excluded canned food, sausages, smoked meat, animal fats, cabbage, dried beans, french fries, spicy foods (pepper, paprika, mustard). overnight viagra appalachianmagazine.com 3.) Germinate some seeds in trays, in doors, under shop lights. Regular old fluorescent four foot tube bulbs. This isn’t great, but it will work. When you germinate pot seeds indoors on a window sill, the sprouts do not get enough FULL SPECTRUM light.  They will grow tall, spindly and weak. They will fall over from being top heavy and will take on the “S” shape that means to me: failure. I want these germinants to grow a thick short stem and to grow a lot of roots. Once they have grown too leggy, too tall, they are no good to me. Perhaps you can baby them along outdoors and get some of them to grow into a healthy shape. But usually the long stretched out stem will get sunburned and die, or else it’ll fall over and the stem will crimp and break and the young plant will die. As I said, regular old shop lights with the two 4 foot long tubes will work okay indoors, for a week or two.

But as soon as possible, get each plant up potted into a larger container and move them outside into the real sunlight. Manufactured sunlight will cost you a lot of money to buy the fixtures as well as to run them. Even with the new “early-girl”seed varieties, you will want the plants to live outside because only the sun will give your sprouts enough energy to grow thick and lustrous vegetative growth. The young sprouts are delicate, so they need to be bumped around as little as possible. Keep your kids and pets away from your plants. Squirles too.

Grow a crop of pot plants this season. The druids in our various city councils through-out this state have sold out to the corporate grow operations. They make no tax revenue monies from us citizen, at home growers. They are not happy about this situation. Learn to grow your own. You can do this.

March 1st, 2014

Ladies and Gentlemen…Start your engines. It’s March 1st, 2014 and I’m going to resume writing my advice columns again on growing marijuana outside. As soon as the night time low temps stay above 39˚, then we outdoor growers can get busy. The young sprouts cannot withstand temps lower than 39˚ or 40˚ at night.

We are getting 11 1/3 hours of sunlight now and it is steadily increasing. By mid June, we’ll be getting 15 1/2 hours of sunlight during the day. That is FREE, non-polluting good old fashioned SUNLIGHT. During March I’ll be cleaning the plastic/vinyl barrels, turning the compost piles, putting my seed-stock together, etc. Also gotta get my germination station put together. I like expandible pellets, seed starter soil, and I like to label everything…strain and dates. Check the shed and see what fertilizers are leftover from last year. I’ll peruse all my various marijuana books, including my own, start thinking about security issues as well as genetic aspirations (seed stock).

At any rate, as an outdoor grower, it is too cold to bother with germinating yet. I’m still “testing” the pot that I grew last season. It’s a tuff job…but somebody has to do it, so I get to do it. It is legal now, you know? At least as long as no one sees me, hears me or smells me doing it. This is an odd kind of “legal”.

This whole marijuana industry is the most OVER-taxed and OVER-regulated industry in this state. I wish the Petro-Chem-Fracking industry was as “well regulated”.

Folks, please act in responsible manner when using erb. Please do not allow your kids or pets to get into your stash or eat your edibles. While the politicians and the strait-cats run around squeaking like frightened geese…we marijuana users sit at home, happy, mellow and comfortable. While the strait-cats worry about what other people in other states may think about us Coloradoans, I just smoke another joint, pick up my guitar and play. Meanwhile, Hick and all the Denver City Council people try to divey up all the expected tax revenue. All of this strait-cat consternation makes me smile. I just gotta say this…smoke a joint and calm down.

So…I’ll be writing/posting this drivel on this web site. All of you are invited to visit my web-site and please do ask me questions. The next big challenge during March is to obtain marijuana seeds and germinate them. You’ll have to then transfer the germinant sprout to a larger container, very carefully. Lets wait a while however and watch the long range weather forcast. Stay in touch.

Exorbitant Pot Taxes

At its longest, in the middle of summer, late June actually, we have 15 hours of daylight. Now, here we are, mid December we see that the shortest day of the year gives us only 9 hours, 20 minutes of sunlight. Thats quite a swing.

Our girls can feel this decreasing amount of light every day. This is the key to growing sensimillia marijuana. You can either grow indoors in a totally controlled indoor environment or you can grow outdoors and use your knowledge of how the solar seasons work. Or, you can buy “auto flowering” seeds or clones. Auto-pot will go into its flowering stage automatically about 4 to 6 weeks after it germinates. So, folks, if you choose to grow auto flowering pot plants,  you’ll want to get as much vegetative growth as possible as soon as your germinants get roots under them. Get as much growth as you can out of your young auto flowering plants; hit them with 20-0-10 or 24-8-16 fertilizer…high nitrogen with some (k) for the roots. I’m told that these (new to  me) autos will flower up and be ready to harvest in 4 1/2 months from germination. Hmm, we’ll see about that. I’ll be growing one or two autos next season along with some non auto flowering “early” girls.

You who live up in the Colorado mountain valleys might be interested in growing plants that will fully mature in only 4 1/2 months. They may not grow very big, but if you can get a mature crop of nice buds, well…according to Constitutional Amendment #64, sections #3b, 3c and #3d, every adult citizen of the state of Colorado has the right to grow 6 marijuana plants. In this way, we can lawfully avoid paying the exorbitant pot taxes. You can do this.

Marijuana

Marijuana is not your enemy. Pot is not sinful or evil. It is not a “gateway drug”. Life itself is a gateway… No matter how you count the carnage, directly or indirectly, alcohol and tobacco are responsible for several thousands of deaths every year,as opposed to pot. Some young adults act stupid when they smoke pot…big deal. Some folks complain about there being too many dispensaries around town. There are twice as many churches and three times as many liquor stores as there are pot-shops. Every restaurant and bar sells alcohol…but all their patrons are outside the front door, spilled out onto the public sidewalks smoking tobacco sticks. Yes, it’s a crazy world. Smoke a joint and chill out. Marijuana is not your enemy.

With our new found freedom, we all must act civil and responsible. Don’t make a mess. If you do…clean up your mess.

However, cialis stores ignoring the problem does not make it disappear. They should also follow a healthy lifestyle and should include 5mg cialis vegetables and fruits rich in carbohydrates and proteins in their diet. Do You Need a Prescription ? Since recall, a therapist sees patients throughout the day, consistently, who are much the same as to the drug finasteride viagra cheap sale by blocking the production of male sexual hormone as well. If we the citizens of Colorado continue to vote en masse, 64% pro marijuana, then perhaps we can continue to enjoy our constitutional right to grow and use marijuana. The pendulum swings, but if you know how to quietly grow some marijuana plants, it won’t hit you in the butt next time the pendulum swings back against us. Learn how to grow your own get-high. You’ll save money, and nobody can take this knowledge away from you.

There are people on the Denver City Council who are trying to re-criminalize marijuana use. We need to vote them out of office. Know who you’re voting for; tell your friends, too. Don’t allow the politicians to take away our Constitutional Right to grow pot outdoors. If the politicians take away our right to grow outdoors, under the natural sunlight, then all that’ll be left is indoor growing. Growing indoors is expensive and is not eco-friendly. It is not healthy living in a greenhouse, or tuning  your basement into a greenhouse. It is not healthy. Marijuana is not the thing to be afraid of, politicians are.

End of the Season

It is the end of the Season. This year here on the Colorado Front Range, you (I) could have grown out doors until November 3rd at least. Only having to cover your plants 3 or 4 or 5 times, you could have grown those sativa dominant plants into early November. I kept mine going until late in the 3rd week of October. Several times this season I did have to build a tent over the girls, to protect them from the weather. Also, this year I did not get the super high yields I had anticipated, however each one of all 11 plants is very potent. As they cure in glass jars they smell and taste better and better. Remember to go thru all your glass jars: open them up everyday so that they can breath…this lets the green agri- smell (chlorophyl) out of the jars.

As I have advised you to do, I put the fresh trimmed flower buds into paper lunch bags. I put them into the bags only one layer deep. That is so they will dry out. You don’t want to pile buds in there very deep because you don’t want this vegetative matter to compost, rot or mold. Leave those lunch bags full of drying buds under a table or just put them out of the way. I use paper bags because they are easy to procure and are cheap to purchase. Every time you go to a burger drive thru, save the paper bag. As your buds dry in a paper bag, it is dark inside and no dust or cat or dog hair gets in and no prying eyes can easily see what you’re doing. If you use drying racks, I recommend that you dry in the dark, slowly. I’ll put a paper label in those ‘dry bags’ with the date and strain name. After about 5 days of sitting and drying out, I’ll double them up (combine buds in the paper bags, they shrink up a bit so there is more room in the bags after 5 or 6 days of drying). I’ll be needing the space on the floor and will reuse the paper bags for the next batch to be harvested. Although the buds aren’t yet dry and solid, I’ll combine 2 or 3 bags contents into one lunch bag. This frees up more bags. After 3 or 4 more days, I’ll weigh the buds and put them into glass jars with labels. This “bagged and tagged” method has worked well for me although it is impractical if you have 30 or 40 plants. Lets say each plant yields, eventually, 12 ounces of dry buds. Forty plants, each yielding 3/4 lb of dry buds will come to thirty pounds of pot. That would take approximately 90 large glass jars. Some big indica plants can yield a lot more than 12 ounces, too.

I let my erb cure in glass jars for anywhere form 15 days to several months. Paper bags breath, glass jars do not. I open the jars every day at first, to check for dampness and smell. This process of “curing” is how your home grown erb reaches its full potential. Do not smoke around you pot as it dries and cures out. At each stage in this process, I’m looking for seeds. Any seeds that come rolling out of any bud, I’ll put it away for next year. There are no hemp fields in Denver, Colorado or in my neighborhood so I will keep these seeds and germinate them next February. Also, every season I hand pollinate selected plants so that I do get seeds for next season.

Speaking of the next growing season…I’m going to complete the rib-cage of 4×4’s and 2×4’s that encloses my back yard. Many times this past season, I did have to “build a tent” to protect the girls. As I place the 4×4 poles in the ground every 8 or 9 feet, I’ve ended up with many “8 or 9 foot (by 8 1/2 foot tall) squares” under which to grow my plants. Among other things, I’ll be able to create, (using tarps) a light deprivation area where I can sex the young plants next May and June. This year I had 3 plants “go male” during the first two weeks of August. Well, thats a bummer. Some plants’ genetics are so screwed up that the plants that have been crossed, re-crossed, criss-crossed, back-crossed and double -crossed so many times that, although it might eventually be some superb erb, it won’t disclose its sex until very late in the year. Since I’m growing in buckets, we moved the males away from the female plants. I was going to harvest the male pollen from each male plant, but decided to just cut them down and throw them away. This is why growing from seeds can be so frustrating.

With the passage of the “AA” pot taxes, your dispensary prices WILL be going up, at least 25% to cover the taxes and another 25 or 35% to cover the increased retail demand come January-February. We who grow our own erb won’t really be affected by these large price increases.   When you Just-Do-This and grow your own medicine, we all will be way ahead.

No Way on Double A

All Coloradoans will get to vote on a tax scheme on November 5th, 2013. This tax has nothing to do with our Constitutional Amendment #64. This vote has to do with a bad idea from the Colorado State Legistature, House Bill 13-1318, which asks us for two kinds of additional taxes…a new excise tax and an additional sales tax. Vote no on these, my friend, our dispensary marijuana is already taxed at nearly 8%. Medicines should not be taxed. Recreational pot will already be taxed at this (8%) over the counter tax rate, same as clothing, books or any other consumer items.

The Public Schools are also asking for additional tax revenues (#66). So your tax load may already be going up, anyway. If you vote yes on AA,  you’ll be imposing a 15% state excise tax at the wholesale level, and it will impose an additional 10% state sales tax on top of the existing taxes on retail over the counter pot sales and marijuana products. This is money out of our pockets. This bad law will allow the state to,yet  again, increase the excise and sales taxes on retail marijuana sales (without your vote on it), from an already high 10% to a bloated 15%.

So, anyway, I am voting NO on the marijuana tax add ons (AA). The state and counties already are making plenty of money every time one of us goes to a dispensary to purchase a 1/4 ounce or some Canna Lotion or some edibles. This stuff is already very expensive. The few counties and cities that allow the sales of Med pot are making a LOT of  MONEY already. Also, if the new additional tax, AA, does pass the state government will give so much of that money to the police forces to help “regulate” our industry, and that means they’ll clamp down ( regulate) you and me.

Harvest Time

time to harvest

mature bud

It’s harvest time.

Folks, your plants are growing at their own natural speed now. You really cannot speed ’em up…not with fertilizers, beer, sugar, apple juice, et.al. These pot plants are in slow motion…but they are in an important stage of growth. It is probably more difficult to grow trichomes than it is to grow vegetative structure; twigs and leaves. Yes it is infuriating how slow they seem to be growing. It looks as though the weather here on the front range will be warm, dry and sunny for at least another week. So take a deep breath and be patient.

Use your energies to keep punks and thieves out of your pot patch. Also, there is a balancing act: water them less and less but give them enough water so that the plants will be hydrated and healthy. The girls’ buds are still plumping and swelling and growing more and more sugar trichomes. Everyday the girls get to be more mature. With the weather so good, now, down here in the flatlands…I recommend you let ’em grow. Use plain old water with maybe some molasses…no fertilizers.

My indica dominant plants are very close to actual take-down harvest time.  I have been doing selective clipping to some of them already. My sativa dominant girls seem to have a ways to go if they are going to mature up before the weather changes.

If the outer 5 or 6 inches of a twig have mature buds on it…clip that off and take it in to be trimmed, dried and then cured. Carefully look the plant over for other twigs with fully mature buds.

harvested marijuana plant

Eventually it will look like this. When to harvest is up to the grower. I like to try to let the less mature buds keep growing in the Colorado sunlight. It could take  up to 7 days for me to fully clip a plant down.

Trim with clean, sharp scissors. It is a process of reduction…twigs snipped off the stem, then the individual buds cut from the twig. You can grow soda can sized buds, but I would still cut them down to individual flower buds. Huge colas are great for your yield and make for nice pictures. I, however don’t like to try to dry stems or twigs or those big thick multi-flower bud colas. Those green twigs stubbornly hold water and can mold up on you. If there is any mold in a jar of buds, I throw away all the pot in there. Mold or mildew spores spread very easily…and should not be inhaled, so don’t smoke it. If all of the pot inside the jar has been subjected to mold spores, it is all ruined. I am sorry to say…been there, seen that, threw it away, lived to grow pot another day.

Drying is important…and is easy. Curing is so important but is kind of difficult. I dry the freshly trimmed buds in paper bags, no more than 1 1/2 inches deep or layer of buds. After 5 or 6 days and nights in those bags, if I reckon that all the pot is good and dry, I weigh the buds and put them into glass jars to cure.

Every day for the 1st week, I open the lid of each jar to let the chlorophyl out and to check for any wetness, or dampness. I leave the lids off, the jars open for about 5 minutes. If the pot clumps up or feels damp, leave the lid off a little longer, let it breath. If you have rushed things and the pot is too, too damp…take it out of the glass jar and re-dry it in a paper grocery bag.

If the pot is too dry, is crumbling or brittle, try the damp paper towel taped inside the jar lid trick. Get that paper towel damp, not dripping wet. You can re-hydrate your buds by carefully getting that sponge or paper towel wet and letting it dissipate thru-out the buds in that glass jar. This works but be sure to check every 2 or 3 hours to feel the buds in there that it isn’t, now, too damp. Curing is the most difficult thing to properly do in the chain of pot-growing events. All of your work over the past 6 months can be for naught if you don’t get a god cure on your buds.

Anyway, during the 2nd week of glass, I check each jar for wetness every 2nd or 3rd day. I use glass jars for both curing and long term storage. I tape labels on the sides of each jar as well as to the top of the lid. Weigh your buds after they are dry and always label things. Keep them in a dark, cool, out of the way place.

I’ve found that pot kept in glass jars is the best way to go…just don’t drop one on the floor. Make sure the pot is dry; it doesn’t clump up. You can always re-hydrate it, even two years from now if it gets real dry.

Hey, vote NO on both the state and city, AA taxes.

Selective Harvest

Late September is an exciting time of the season. On one hand, your girls should be flowering, forming up colas. They probably both look and smell good. However there are punks and thieves looking to steal your pot plants. From where I sit, the anxiety level is up there in the red.

When to begin a selective harvest? Well each plant is different. First of all, you can probably find mature buds and not-ready- to-go -yet buds on the same branch. So be thoughtful and selective and do have patience. If you reckon that a few outer buds are ready…try to wait 2 or 3 or 4 more days and nights before you clip them off. Unless the weather forces the issue, or if you think that thieves have your garden in their sights…have patience, and let your plants’ colas plump and swell. After several years of growing your own pot, you’ll get a feel about when it is time to begin a harvest.

early bud

young bud

Here you see a bud that, in my opinion, is not ready to be clipped. Let it grow more miniature leaves, trichomes and pistils. As the pistils grow old, they die off and turn a red tan or brown color. As those pistils age-out, they get krinckled because they dry out. You’ll see many pistils have died and dried…they are krinckled. But look at all those newer, viable pistils. Those cream-white pistils are still trying to snag some male marijuana pollen out of the air. It only takes a few granules of pollen dust to get onto one of those viable pistils, where it is transported down that shaft into the female (ovary) bract where it forms a seed. Since it takes at least 2 1/2 weeks to get a viable seed( 4 or five weeks to get for sure ready to go  germinants)…now is not the time to be pollinating your females. You’re going to be harvesting sooner than it’ll take to grow a viable seed. Probably.

If the weather permits, we would like to allow the sativa dominant plants to go to full maturity…another 3 or 4 weeks. A more sophisticated grower might hand-pollinate their girls in early August. Look at that picture again. It shows me that that bud has the potential to plump-and-swell, adding both weight and sugary trichomes. This flower bud is growing, is energetic and is just getting better and better. All those sugar spots are pollen-grabbers…the more frustrated the plant is, the more trichomes it will grow.

We are past the full moon by a couple days. These next 15 nights will be dark. These plants react to the length of light/dark. I like it when the projected harvest falls in a dark moonless night period.

Here is a flower bud that you could clip it off now, trim it and dry it. Or you could let it ripen for another few days. It is the experienced farmer’s perogative. Generally the thinking is that when you clip the bud a little early, while it still has a lot of creamy white pistils, then that pot will be more of a cerebral, head high. If you wait to clip it ’till all the pistils are colored, then it’ll be more of a body high. You will have to learn this for yourself and through a few years experience…you’ll do what’s best for yourself. This and the plants’ specific genetics are two areas where you the grower has power. Some plants put you down at night. Some plants help you to feel good enough to tackle the new day. Some plants ease your pain while other plants help your creativity. You’ll hafta figure this out for yourself, as to which kind of pot you like and need to use.

Generally…I am not using any fertilizers on the girls. I did use some molasses on them 2 or 3 days ago…sugar for energy. I do not want to over-water any of the plants…but they do need to be kept hydrated. I’m giving them about 1/2 a gallon in the morning and 1/2 gallon in mid afternoon. I prefer to harvest during dark moonless periods… in the evening at the end of sunny dry days. I like to selectively cut off branches when they are good and ready. I like to clip on a plant (selectively) over a period of up to two weeks, since an entire plant doesn’t usually mature-up all at the same time.

When the weather turns bad, you may have to cut down an entire plant, bring it inside and maybe hang it upside down from your shower-curtain rod.

The trimming operation is one of reduction. Clip the branches from the main stems. Clip the twigs from the branches. Clip off all of the large sun leaves…try to uncover the flower buds. I don’t like to dry the twigs so I cut the flowers off. More on all of this later. Harvest, trim, dry, cure…this is the most important 1/2 of this pot-growing operation. More later.

Have Scissors…Will Trim

Okay, it has been a while since I’ve written a new article. Not that we are into late September, your plants should have at least begun to flower up. Plants that are indica dominant should be forming colas or clubs. Mine look like Popeyes arms. As the pistillate growth continues, you’ll see more and more clear, white hairs (pistills) growing. Even as some of these turn tan or brown or orange when they die off, you should also be seeing the pollen attractant (sugars) growing on every surface. As the plant grows new leaves, they will be miniature leaves that the plant can grow trichome sugars on. This action is what I call plumping and swelling. This is how these plants grow thick colas that are like a small baseball bat. It takes time and sunlight. Sunday, 22nd is the Fall Equinox. Even shorter days and cooler nights are ahead.

Clip off all of the big outer leaves to allow air and sunlight to get to the developing flower buds. You may have to put on a layer of mulch over the top lateral roots of each plant. Either a mulch or a high quality soil will keep those roots from drying out.

By now, I have stopped using any fertilizer on the girls. As sinsemilla plants, they are doing what they are supposed to be doing…trying to get pollinated. Our job is to not let them get pollinated; have all of the males removed and destroyed by early August or as soon as you decide that that plant is a male.

Especially now, as we have a full moon behind us and the equinox on the 22nd, get prepared for harvest. For the next 3 weeks or so, the nights will have less and less moonlight as well as the nights will be getting longer. Even the sativa dominant plants will react to these conditions. I’m sure I’ve already mentioned it…I sprinkled onto each plant a very little bone meal or super phosphate about 3 weeks ago. Phosphates make your plants and flowers bloom.

You’ll need to get some scissors, sharp and clean. Two pair at least…one pair needs to be heavy-duty. One pair is small, dainty even, but sharp.

trim scissors

You’ll also need a lot of brown paper bags, both lunch size and grocery bag size. You’ll need some small paper tags to put the plants’ name on and the date trimmed.

Also, you’ll need to find very many glass jars with screw lids. Clean them out real good… you don’t want your pot smelling like pickle relish or beets.  You will be surprised at how many dry buds you’ll end up with. I cure my pot in glass jars for at least 5 weeks…and I do long term storage in these glass jars, too.

When you dry your buds in paper bags it’ll take five to ten days. Then you put the pot into glass jars which you’ll have to open up every day or two, to air out. This will help to avoid mold growth and will drive off the chlorophyl taste.

Long, dark nights convince the girls that the end of the season is near. They go into a hyper-anxiety sexual frenzy. These plants want to get pollinated NOW, but don’t let them.

I’m watering much less than during the hot July-August months. Only abut 1 1/2 gallons a day per container. These big girls do need a lot of water to stay healthy and grow trichomes, but I don’t want the plants to get root rot …and if the soil gets too mushy the big plant will tip over.

Try to have patience. Allow your girls to grow and flourish during these sunny days post rainstorms. A little sugar (molasses, soda pop) and beer is alright but don’t go overboard…don’t spend money just for this. Really, good old water is what the girls need now. That and a lot of direct sunlight. These plants are adding weight and quality as they mature.

You’ll be watching their pistils change color as they individually die off. As long as the buds on the plants are forming new pistils (female ovary bracts and the two creamy hairs) you might as well let it stay on the plant to continue to add more pollen attractant (THC sugars). When to harvest is always the farmer’s perogative, but it is very probably too early yet. More on this, later. Power to the people, not to the corporations.

Vote No on AA tax issue

The direct sunlight is now softer than it was, even two weeks ago. I can feel the weather change. The nights are cooler, the days are shorter. As I would expect…the indica dominate girls are forming colas while the sativa girls, although flowering, are a good  two weeks behind. As I review my notes…in 2010 I had to pull a harvest in early October. In ’11, I began a leisurely harvest on October third and finished on October 24th. Last year, ’12, I had to pull a quick harvest by September 27th. I am thinking that this year we’ll have another 3 weeks from now at least. It’s up to Mother Nature of course, but hopefully we’ll get to keep our sativas growing for another 5 or 6 weeks, well into October.

Even light rain with big wind is bad weather for us. Of course heavy rain, hail or ice storms will be bad for us, too. A deep snow or a wet snow has weight and can weigh down and break down a cola laden branch. A deep freeze is ultimately the end of the line. We sometimes will have two or three nights in a row of very cold temps (28˚, 29˚, 30˚),then an Indian summer kicks in and we can have 10 to 15 mild days and nights. If we are able to get our plants into October without frost damage, then our sativa dominant plants will be almost fully mature. The plants pretty much keep on plumping and swelling as they continue to grow more male pollen attracting THC trichomes.

I have fertilized for the last time with bloom booster 2 days ago. From here on out, just water, no chemical fertilizers. Some folks will continue to put beer, sugar, soda pop, apple juice, molassas, etc into the water bucket and onto their plants. This is okay, but don’t go nuts. The high phosphorus bloom booster fertilizer, along with the shorter days has triggered these plants to leave their “vegetative”stage and go into their end of season pistillate flower growth stage.

Don’t overwater the containers, now that the daytime temps have moderated. Do clip off all of the big outer leaves. This allows for air and sunlight to get into the center of the plant which will allow those hidden flowers to plump and sugar up. Your main job now is to protect the girls from bad weather and from thieves.

By the way…spice is NOT synthetic marijuana. It is NOT POT. The incense-spice crap is in NO WAY anything at all like erb. That stuff is produced, packaged, distributed by greedy capitalists who sell it to your children. That stuff does NOT mimick the various effects of marijuana. That spice crap is dangerous and has NO medical qualities. Don’t buy it, do not use it. Grow your own pot and be certain what is in it. You don’t pay any tax on the corn and tomatoes your grow at home. You won’t pay any taxes on the marijuana that you grow at home, either. Which leads me to the November elections. I urge you to vote no on ballot measure AA which is the retail marijuana tax issue. We already have #64 on the books. We already have an over the counter sales tax of around 8%. Leave things the way they are right now. What the strait cats don’t like is our FREEDOM. The fact that they can no longer have power over us is what bothers the suits. Now the politicians smell money to be made and they want to give a large portion of that revenue to the cops to give them some power over us. Well the long and short of it is , just vote no on AA.

Thanks to the Obama administration

Thanks to the Obama administration …the Federal Government will not sue the states of Washington and Colorado the close down the Federally illegal Medical marijuana industry…dispensaries and grow operations. In the tug of war between the individual states and the Federal Government…at this time the peoples of these two states WIN. So for at least 3 more years we will be able to legally grow, buy from a dispensary and smoke marijuana in our state. It’s still not totally legal to do these things out in the open…and what has been called legalization, I call decriminalization. Still, we are moving in the correct direction. Again, thanks to the Obama administration.

You don’t have to act like Cheech and Chong when you get high. Let’s not give the conservatives any ammunition or reason to try to undo the progress that we have made.

*Sexual Angst*

Okay, maybe now I’ve got your attention. All plants want to reproduce; that is genetically built in. Pot plants go whacky when you take the males out of this equation. All of my girls are cranky from not being pollinated. Over the next four to seven weeks the girls will be forming large dense, sticky flower buds. If there is any male pot pollen in the air, these buds will grab that dust out of the air and will produce seeds. We only want this to happen in a controlled manner, if at all. When the girls do not get pollinated, they go into overdrive producing more and more THC trichomes. Angst everywhere…thieves  everywhere, too.

Scientists the world over are studying these trichomes, the THC complex, to find out what is going on. When they do figure it out, the corporations will buy a patent to synthesize the various compounds (THC, CBD, GBN, CBC, CBNA, etc) to make pills to sell to you. You don’t need to fall for this chicanery…just grow your own marijuana medicine. No one can take your knowledge and experience away from you. You’ll know how to grow sensi-erb all on your own, be more self-sufficient.

By now, 1st of September, you should be fertilizing your girls, every 6 or 7 days with a bloom booster fertilizer…low nitrogen, high phosphate, moderate potassium. You should be cutting down the amount of water you put into each container. You should be cutting off all of the yellowed leaves…in fact, start cutting off all of the big outer leaves.

There were some hot, windy days in August when I felt I had to pour 3 gallons of water into each plants’ container. I am trying this year to use less water…less than in years past. I used to put 3 1/2 gallons of water onto each plant, per day. This year I’ve cut it down to 3 gallons, maybe even a little less. Now as we enter September, I am watering each plant  about 2 1/2 gallons per day. Usually 1 or 1 1/2 gallons in the morning and another gallon or gallon and a 1/4 in the late afternoon. These big plants need to stay hydrated, as there is a lot of vegetative structure. September is often warm and windy. I’m watching the T.V. weather for any hints of heavy rains, heavy winds or any hail in my neighborhood.

Next…you’ll only be fertilizing them 2 or 3 more times before your girls will go into a water only-flush regiment. We do want to get out all of the salts that we fertilized with…out of the plant before we harvest and smoke it. Sure, sure, I eat tomatoes that were heavily fertilized and not even flushed. Nothing wrong with me except that I have 3 ears now. With our pot, we really do want it to be medical grade. The last two or 3 weeks before harvest, only water them with clean, pure water, no fertilizer. If you believe that where you are growing your erb, you may only have 3 more weeks until harvest…then you will only fertilize once more. I’m betting that the weather will allow us to keep on growing well into October. I’ve been way-wrong in the past so it is a gamble. The longer the growing season is, the more mature our sativa dominant plants will be. Let your tap water sit for 25 or 30 hours in order to allow the chlorine to evaporate out. I use gallon milk and orange juice jugs so that I can measure out the amount of water I ladle out to the girls.

The biggest difference (to me as a farmer) between indica and sativa is in how long it takes for the different plants to fully mature. All of them are in a flowering mode and all of our girls are slowing down in terms of their daily growth. The sativa dominant girls can go well into November to fully mature. Unfortunately, the weather won’t allow us outdoor growers to do so. Your indica dominant girls will be ready by 3rd week of September on into mid October. Your Sativa dominant plants probably will take a little longer. Many years at harvest time, I wished I had ten more days or two more weeks before I had to cut ’em down. But by late September, you’ll be losing all of your cover crops that helped to hide your plants all summer long. And we often have a deep freeze that’ll kill your plants. But like I said, I am hoping this year for a long drawn out warm Fall, with only a light frost one or two nights and then a long “Indian Summer”.

Folks, you are in the home stretch…have patience and let them grow and grow. You can do this. Now is not yet the time to give in and pull an early harvest. Grit your teeth…watch for thieves. Your plants are doing what you want them to do…growing THC sugars. Let them grow, plump and swell. Watch for thieves.

P.S. Always watch for thieves as they don’t always strike at night.

Kick ’em into gear

We are in the home stretch now. It’s time to kick ’em into gear. There are only 38 days until September 27th…often the last day before harvest. There are only 51 days until October 10th. I’m hoping for a long growing season, which would allow the sativa dominant plants to more fully mature. Many years I’ve had to pull an early harvest (late September). Only rarely have I been afforded the luxury of doing a long, drawn out harvest…into the 2nd or third week of October. It’s nice when the weather cooperates and I get to do a long harvest, with no rush.

You should be fertilizing with a bloom boost type fertilizer, with low nitrogen (N), high phosphate (P) and moderate (K).

Beer, sugar or molasses is okay anytime, but go easy. All that your plants really need everyday is water. I use really large containers to grow my plants in. Yesterday I put over 3 gallons into each container. Today I put in about 2 1/2 gallons into each. It has been hot and dry with no clouds. The girls are big and they need the water. I water them 3 times a day, almost one gallon each time I water them. I am trying to water as little as possible, hopefully less than last year. Sunny, cloudless days mean that they need to be hydrated often.

Another thing…cut off the dead leaves. Cut off those leaves that are yellowed and those leaves that are damaged. Cut out the sucker-twigs growing up thru the center of your plants. Do some maintenance with a good pair of scissors, give them enough water and then leave them alone. You’ll notice that they are flowering up and starting to smell good. We want our girls to flower up and not get pollinated (pregnant). Make sure that you’ve gotten rid of any late-turning males.

I have noticed that many of the containers need to be backfilled in order to protect those top-lateral roots. Tomorrow I’ll add about 2 inches of soil to each container.

This next two months is an anxious time. Many of my friends will be sleeping outside with their crops in order to thwart thieves.

We’ll have to stop all fertilizing 15 to 20 days prior to harvest. So, start watching the long-term TV weather forecasts.

So, we’re worried about bad weather and theives. Don’t throw any lawn parties, or even show these plants off to your buddies. Mum is the word.

It’s time to bloom

It’s high time for us to fertilize with bloom booster (low nitrogen, high phosphates…) if you haven’t started already. The days are getting shorter, the nights cooler. We have between 6 weeks and 9 weeks until harvest. It is time to bloom! Especially if you are growing in the high mountains or even the foot hills, you may only have 5 weeks until it is way too cold at night to maintain your outdoor gardens. It’s the second half of August and the night time low temps can get down to 27˚, low enough to cause damage to your girls. We now want our girls to flower up, form buds, for four to eight weeks.

Now is also a good time to take your scissors out to your garden. Cut off all of those yellow leaves and all the big or standard size leaves that are worn out. If they have holes or wind damage, cut them off. As you are looking closely at the interior of the plants, try to discern which of the branches/twigs is a “sucker twig”, and cut it out. We don’t want a bunch of thin, bare twigs growing up thru the middle of the plant. These sucker twigs are just too much weight and take up too much of the plant’s energy as well as sucking up the sunlight. We do want air and sunlight getting into the center of our plants. Molasses is often a good thing to add the bloom booster fertilizer at this time.

I reckon that we here in Denver County will have some difficult weather over these next 6+ weeks. Those of you who live north, south or east of us have already gotten clobbered by rain, hail and strong wind. So, folks, you’ll have to be thinking of a way to protect your girls. A hard hail storm can strip your plants and can literally knock them senseless. We are now in the home stretch. Don’t let mother nature slip you the fickle finger of fate. Be ready and be prepared for bad weather; it is coming.

If you are going to try to pollinate one of your girls…do it now. Your girls should be showing those white pistels, and should soon be ready to receive pollen if not already. I’ve been harvesting/collecting pollen from those darn males. When I want to, I can fertilize one of the females with that powder. Just do one branch and then mark it with a bread-loaf tie. Write down what you did and what color tie was used. Then during the harvest, you’ll have to set that branch aside and deal with it seperately. Those seeds, if any were produced at all, will be a new hybrid…your own. Next season you can germinate and grow those that “go female”. If you simply pollinate, say an indica with the same indica, you are back-crossing, or stablizing the breed. This is what you’ll do when you have developed or found a kind of plant (genetics) that you want to keep. When you come across a particular kind of pot you like, go for it next season and grow 6 of them. I seem to always grow 6 different kinds of pot every year. You can purchase clones at about half of the medical dispensaries in Colorado. You can buy AK-47, Purple this and that, Durban, California Blue or Orange…etc. The only thing I’ll tell you about clones is that they are not as hardy outdoors in March, April, May…and they do not have the energy or vibrancy of seed-grown plants as they do not have the seed or the tap-root. Also, some growers have developed “auto-flowering” seeds or clones. These tend to go male or female early and then flower-up right away. If you are an outdoor gardener, these will be dissapointedly small, yielding only about 1 1/2 ounces of dry bud for each plant. Another thing about clones that you buy, often they were grown under 18+ hours of light. As soon as you set them outside (in April lets say) they will go into bloom because the actual light is only 10 1/2 or so hours per day. You’ll have a single, 1 foot tall plant. When new clones are grown under a 12 hours on, 12 hours off light schedule, they will transplant to the outdoors nicely.

CO2 is used in greenhouses or indoor grow operations as a foliar fertilizer. It really works. Now, outdoors what you do is put fans on your girls. By pushing more air past your plants, you’ll increase the amount of CO2 that is available to them. I don’t bother doing this. In 40 years growing pot…never felt the need to put electric fans outdoors. Haven’t been dissatisfied with the results, so far either.  On the Colorado Front Range, we have plenty of windy, blustery evenings.

What you might think about doing next year is buying a water tank to hold and condition your gardens water. Put a fish tank oxygenator into the tank. It’ll help to drive out the chlorine that the city puts into our drinking water. More so, it’ll put oxygen into the plants irrigation water that will go straight to the roots where it will be appreciated.

I have had a couple plants ‘go male’ during the 1st two weeks of August! This really sucks…makes me re-think the ‘growing from seed strategy’. Plants that turn male during the 2nd half of July are irritating. Plants that turn male in August are just a dead-loss, as it is too late now, to start over with a 5 inch clone, let alone a seed germinant.

Over the next 5 to 8 weeks, we want flowers to grow and get thick and form colas. Then we will begin a selective harvest of those colas that are ready to clip off. Then we’ll be trimming these buds off from the twig…ending up with 3 piles on the table.

Where and How Many?

According to #64, sect. 3b, 3c, 3d…it is lawful for ALL adult citizens of Colorado to grow their own meds, outside on their own property. We can grow 6 females for each adult that lives at a property. Certainly two adults can grow 12 plants. Without any case-law on this subject, we don’t know what the upper limits might be when it comes to the plant-count. I believe that 5 adults, living at an address within Colorado should be legally able to grow up to 30 plants there. No matter what, we are NOT supposed to sell any of the dried buds, especially to anyone out of state.

So, I respect the Colorado #64 law, as it decriminalizes growing some pot plants indoors or outdoors. But it is still a criminal event if you grow too many plants at your home property. All adult citizens of Colorado have the legal right to grow 6 pot plants…but  where and exactly  how many?

If you do choose to grow an outdoor garden, do it in full sunlight, out of sight, behind a fence with locked gates. I’ve already written about the “Plain View Doctrine” in past articles.

As your young pot plant germinants get big enough to transplant into bigger containers, use a diluted 24-8-16 fertilizer on them once a week. As we get into mid-July, I use a 20-20-20 fertilizer on the girls. As we move towards the middle 1/3 of August, I’ll use a single application of Super Phosphate to steer the girls toward flowering up. And I’ll use a Bloom Booster (low nitrogen, high phosphorus) fertilizer once a week. Then, about 3 weeks before harvest, I stop using any chemical fertilizers and just use plain clean water every day.

When your girls are “big enough”…that is a good time to switch to a bloom booster fertilizer. The girls are big enough when you think that they are. Are they getting taller than the fence? If the new leaves are growing out of the stem opposite each other, then that plant is still in a “vegetative growth stage”. If the new leaves are growing from the stem in an alternating fashion, then that plant is going into a” flower-bloom stage”. Also, I don’t fertilize when it is too hot…anything over 95 is getting too hot. The girls are just trying to stay alive and hydrated when their tops and roots get too hot. Wait until it cools down in the evening. Also in mid to late July, I start cleaning out the insides of the plants. With sharp heavy scissors, I cut out the big sun leaves from the plants interior. I also cut out the sucker twigs that grow up thru the middle of the bushy plant. I call ’em sucker twigs because they will only have one bud on the end of a 3 foot long twig where it breaks thru the canopy.

Certainly, cut off any big or medium sized leaves that are old and have turned yellow. The more often you cut the tops of your plants off, the more bushy interior growth you ‘ll be promoting. You probably shouldn’t allow your plants to grow up 8 ft or 10 ft tall. Every time you “top ’em” ,the bushier they’ll grow. That is good only up to a point. An overgrown plant will have a lot of small buds, it’s hard to harvest and trim. I like my plants to have an open-and-airy center. The primary branches can carry the load as far as flower buds go. I’ll let some of the secondary branches/twigs remain to grow and flower up. But all of the tertiary twigs will be cut off.

Keep your plants spaced apart to allow sunlight and air to get in there. Keep the plants watered and figure out a way to protect them from future hailstorms.

As you probably know, here in Colorado on the Front Range, we can have serious weather events, anytime. Especially in late summer. A steady rain mixed with a breezy evening can damage your plants. Flower clusters can hold water like a sponge and then they  get heavy. It only takes a few burst of wind to break off an entire arm or branch. If this happens, cut up an old t-shirt into strips. Use these long cotton strips to wrap-up and bandage these partially broken branches.

We may have to pull a harvest in late September or we may get to grow well into October. If it is up to me, I’ll pull a selective harvest whenever a flower cluster is ready, starting late September. I have spent up to 3 weeks harvesting a plant, only cutting off those flower buds that really are ready, allowing other buds to get the sunshine they want.

I have also had to pull a harvest in the middle of the night, in a rain storm. Figure out which TV weather person you can trust and watch the weather forecasts daily.
